Marie Curie Pots
To show that you can respect and care for yourself, others and the environment we have teamed up with Marie Curie. Marie Curie is a cancer care charity caring for those who are very ill. They are setting you a challenge to care for something all on your own.
But first, who was Marie Curie?
Who was Marie Curie?
Marie Curie is remembered for her discovery of radium and polonium, and her huge contribution to the fight against cancer. Born Maria Sklodowska on November 7, 1867 in Warsaw, Poland, she was the youngest of five children of poor school teachers. During the first world war, Marie Curie worked to develop small, mobile X-ray units that could be used to diagnose injuries near the battlefront. As Director of the Red Cross Radiological Service, she toured Paris, asking for money, supplies and vehicles which could be converted.
In October 1914, the first machines were ready, and Marie set off to the front. She worked with her daughter Irene, then aged 17, at casualty clearing stations close to the front line, X-raying wounded men to locate fractures, bullets and shrapnel. The Marie Curie Hospital and Cancer Care Trust were set up to honour her memory and hard work.
The Mini Pots of Care Challenge!
All children at Oakington will be planting their own daffodil bulb this October. They will then bring it home and try to care for it until it is ready to flower sometime in February.
Your challenge is to care for it, keeping it alive until it flowers. Can you handle the responsibility?
We will also send you home with an envelope to put a contribution for the planting activity. This can be as little as 20p but if you have friends and family who would like to contribute more to a great cause that would be fantastic.
Good luck!

Four boys from year 6 were chosen to attend the Brent Trials. Congratulations to Palanding (6RJ) who made the Brent Squad and played in the first friendly. He was calm and composed, playing really well in defence. The game was won 6-2 against Hackney schools.
FA FOOTBALL COACHING
Year 2 has had a special treat in PE this half term with a Wembley FA Coach teaching them football skills. The children have loved it and improved the skills. FA Cup final oneday anyone? Big thanks Callum!
DETROIT LIONS NFL TRAINING
Are there any NFL future players at Oakington Manor? Year 5 and 6 are going to find out with a trip to a fantastic training event with the NFL Detroit Lions. We will be travelling to Guildford for a coaching and training event with the Detroit Lions players and staff. NFL is growing in popularity with Londoners and especially around Wembley with NFL teams now playing 3 fixtures in Wembley Stadium. Next game is the Detroit Lions v the Atlanta Falcons on October 26. Could anyone be recruited?
